Meet Our Host
Kameelah Waheed is an artist and educator. Hailing from Camden, NJ, Kameelah worked in several schools in New Jersey since the early 90s, and has been immersed in the Philadelphia music scene since that time as well. Falling in love with hip hop as part of the MTV generation in the 80s, her influences greatly varied to include world, tribal and island music, along with dance, electronica, rock and rap artists that inspired her as she came into her own as an original artist.
Kameelah became a professional songwriter with the opportunity to work with Bunny Sigler of Philadelphia International Records. She founded and fronted the hip hop rock band Gov’t Cheaze in 2000, performing at the Black Lily Film Festival and the first Roots Picnic. The Kameelah Waheed & GC song Traveling, produced by Larry Gold, was released overseas on the BBE label, cracking the top 10 urban radio charts in the UK. Gov’t Cheaze released the album Right Now in 2011 on Philly Through My Ear, the label owned by Will Smith Sr.
Since 2020, Kameelah has established herself as a solo artist, releasing the single Holding On on the London-based label, Ram Rock Records, and America the Beautiful in 2021, which has thousands of plays on Spotify. As the producer and host of Rap Lyrics For Class, Kameelah hopes to highlight legendary hip hop artists and contemporary emcees to inspire and educate people who love music and lyrics with powerful messages.
